Welcome to the Ann Tucker Blog!

Welcome to my personal blog. Thanks to my son for building this neat blog page. I decided I wanted to give my thoughts and words to the world and hope they have some meaning and memories to grandparents (and others) everywhere. I am a retired civil servant (35.5 years with the Department of the Air Force), mother of two and grandmother of five. My maiden name was Scaling and I was married to Tilford N. Tucker. I raised and put two great children through college so I have a lot of experiences to build on. After retirement I became a webmaster (working for my son) for some of our family websites: ShaggyDuck
Have a fun time and a great day, bookmark this site and come back often!!!!

Endangered Words?

Someone sent this to me and I knew you would appreciate it:

I came across this phrase in a book yesterday "FENDER SKIRTS." These are obviously from a '57 Chevy. A term I haven't heard in a long time and thinking about "fender skirts." My '54 Ford and my '61 were so equipped. It started me thinking about other words that quietly disappear from our language with hardly a notice.

Remember "Two-Toned"?
Like "curb feelers." I've been thinking about getting a pair of these but couldn't find them in the Auto Parts store. And "steering knobs" (AKA) suicide knob. I put one of these on the '54 and it quickly 'ate' through the steering wheel.

I stopped at a car wash being held by the cheer leaders of the local high school to raise money. I specifically asked the young lady to make sure they did a good job on the "White Walls". When they were done I noticed that they had not cleaned the sides of the tires at all. I went back to the gal and told her that I had intended giving them a nice tip but was very disappointed that they hadn't done the "White Walls". She looked at me puzzled and said... What are
"White Walls"?

Since I'd been thinking of cars, my mind naturally went that direction first. Any kids will probably have to find some elderly person over 50 to explain some of these terms to you. Remember "Continental kits?" They were rear bumper extenders and spare tire covers that were supposed to make any car as cool as a Lincoln Continental. I really wanted one but they were like $150 dollars and that was too much to put on a $300 car.

When did we quit calling them "emergency brakes?" At some point "parking brake" became the proper term. But I miss the hint of drama that went with "emergency brake." I'm sad, too, that almost all the old folks are gone who would call the accelerator the "foot feed." I love to use this word in the classes that I teach that are filled with teens. Didn't you ever wait at the street for your daddy to come home, so you could ride the "running board" up to the house? We had a couple of cars that sat in the back yard that had "running boards" but not "running engines".

Here's a phrase I heard all the time in my youth but never anymore - "store-bought." Of course, just about everything is store-bought these days. But once it was bragging material to have a store-bought dress or a store-bought bag of candy. "Coast to coast" is a phrase that once held all sorts of excitement and now means almost nothing. Now we take the term "world wide" for granted. This floors me. On a smaller scale, "wall-to-wall" was once a magical term in our homes. In the '50s, everyone covered his or her hardwood floors with, wow, wall-to-wall carpeting! Today, everyone replaces their wall-to-wall carpeting with hardwood floors. Go figure.

When's the last time you heard the quaint phrase "in a family way?" It's hard to imagine that the word "pregnant" was once considered a little too graphic, a little too clinical for use in polite company. So we had all that talk about stork visits and "being in a family way" or simply "expecting."

Apparently "brassiere" is a word no longer in usage. If you said this your daughter would probably crack up. I guess it's just "bra" now; "unmentionables" probably wouldn't be understood at all. I always loved going to the "picture show," but I considered "movie" an affectation. Most of these words go back to the '50s, but here's a pure-'60s word I came across the other day - "rat fink." Ooh, what a nasty put-down! Here's a word I miss - "percolator." That was just a fun word to say. And what was it replaced with? "Coffee maker." How dull. Mr. Coffee, I blame you for this. I miss those made-up marketing words that were meant to sound so modern and now sound so retro. Words like "DynaFlow" and "Electrolux." Introducing the 1963 Admiral TV, now with "SpectraVision!"

Food for thought - Was there a telethon that wiped out lumbago? Nobody complains of that anymore. Maybe that's what castor oil cured because I never hear mothers threatening kids with castor oil anymore. Some words aren't gone, but are definitely on the endangered list. The one that grieves me most is "supper." Now everybody says "dinner." Save a great word. Invite someone to supper. Discuss fender skirts. I thought some of us of a "certain age" would remember most of these. Just for fun, Pass it along to others of "a certain age"!! Or they may know someone of "A Certain Age".

Meme - ‘Words to Meditate on’

My friend Preston at Me and Blue Skies, Challenged me to write about (meditate about, whatever that means) how they relate to 5 words that he provides. The person who writes the post has been provided 5 words that somehow relate to them from a blogger who had previously written a words meme post. Once you get the 5 words, write your own ‘Words to Meditate on’ post. Come on, go for it. So following are my 5 memes:

(A meme (pronounced /miːm/) consists of any idea or behavior that can pass from one person to another by learning or imitation. Examples include thoughts, ideas, theories, gestures, practices, fashions...)

Family
I would think most people would think of either mom and dad and siblings or their spouse and kids. To me family is what grounds me. My parents and my sibling have passed on and I am divorced but I have two children and 5 grandchildren who live right here in the same town. I am luckier than most, having my family here.

Equality
Equality is what may never really become a reality. It is trying, America is trying but until many generations have passed on there will still be a few who have that little bit of discrimination of the races and the refusal to believe that women should be treated the same as men.

Photography
There are people who have a special knack for photography. They can take a picture of a paper sack and make it look interesting. Digital cameras have made photographers of a lot of us who probably wouldn't have been able to take good pictures without point and click. I am a roving photographer for our hometown website and love to shoot out of the car window, through the windshield and flipping around in the middle of the street to get a good shot. I may never be a pro but I have a lot of fun.

Water
Where I grew up, the Texas panhandle, we didn't have a swimming pool until I was 11 and that year all the kids in town learned to swim. I loved swimming for many a year and was even a life guard for a time or two. I am a fresh water person and don't care to swim in salt water.

Thrift Shopping
Now this is my R & R and hobby of sorts. I have been garage saleing many a year, probably for 40 years or so. My mom and I went, now my daughter and I go and even half my grandkids like it. It is the thrill of the hunt for that certain item you need but don't want to spend much to get a new one. You almost always find what you are looking for. Or there is the fun of finding something you could live without but you get it anyway. It is the true "one persons trash is anothers treasure."

Sue me
That would be like getting blood out of a turnip. Nuf said.

Fixing Old Trunks

DIY Day @ ASPTL

Do It Yourself Day

I had grabbed up several old trunks at garage sales for next to
nothing (before people started buying them and charging a mint for them in their
antique stores). They were really yucky looking and smelled old and musty inside.
I painted them (different colors) and put some smears of black to give them some character.

Then if you can see past the quilt I have in this one, I decoupaged the
insides with cut up pieces of wall paper from old wallpaper books I got for free
from some paint stores. These old trunks, especially the hump back ones
are wonderful for storage and kids can even sit on them.
P.S. I even have an old steamer trunk in my basement that I paid $2 for
and it has the drawers, hangers and all inside. It is black leather outside
and even has someones initials on it. Makes you feel like you
just got off the Titanic. I just don't have room for it as it is really big.

Roll Your Clothes for Travel

I have rolled my clothes many times when I traveled and they take up less space and have fewer wrinkles. Here is how you do it.

Blouse or shirt:
1. Lay them flat, then bring the ends of the sleeves together and fold the shirt in half down the back.
2. Lay them on one side, place the arms onto the body of the folded shirt, keeping them together, and then roll down from the collar.

Slacks or pants

1. Bring the legs together and fold down the middle seam at the hips (with the back pockets together and the front facing out).
2. Bring the ends of the legs up, and fold the pants so that the ends of the legs and the top of the pants are even.
3. Roll them, starting at the open end and smoothing as you go.

After you roll your clothes, place them in the suitcase with the opening in the roll against the bottom; otherwise, they will come unrolled and get wrinkled. Placing them against each other puts slight pressure on the bundle and has the same effect.

Seventeenth Day of the Seventh Month -Noahs Ark

Genesis 8:4, which states, “and on the seventeenth day of the seventh month the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat,” in The New International Version of the Bible. This summer archaeologist Randall Price, 57, plans to continue on a journey to prove just that as he joins an expedition to Mount Ararat. His team believes that it is there, in Eastern Turkey, where Noah’s Ark remains preserved underneath layers of rubble and ice.

This is what the Bible says about the Ark that God commanded Noah to build: “Build a large boat from cypress wood and waterproof it with tar, inside and out. Then construct decks and stalls throughout its interior. Make the boat 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high. Leave an 18-inch opening below the roof all the way around the boat. Put the door on the side, and build three decks inside the boat—lower, middle, and upper. The cubic volume would have been 1,518,000 cubic feet [462,686.4 cubic meters] -- equal to the capacity of 569 modern railroad cars.

ChristianAnswers.net explains that as many as 50,000 animals (including creatures that may now be extinct) could have fit on board the ark. These would not have needed to be the largest or even adult specimens. They point out that there are really only a few very large animals, such as the dinosaur or the elephant, and these could be represented by young ones. "Assuming the average animal to be about the size of a sheep and using a railroad car for comparison, we note that the average double-deck stock car can accommodate 240 sheep. Thus, three trains hauling 69 cars each would have ample space to carry the 50,000 animals, filling only 37percent of the ark. This would leave an additional 361 cars or enough to make 5 trains of 72 cars each to carry all of the food and baggage plus Noah's family of eight people."

Deployed Parent?

For more tips of all kinds click on the logo above.

I have a Squidoo Lens that is information for families who are military or for people who have military members in their family and who might be going to be deployed. I would like to share this information with you.

When a parent is deployed with the military it can be very traumatic for the children left behind. Having things for them to do, that makes them feel a part of the family and helping the parent who is gone, is really important. There is a list of things you can plan that should help ease the pain of having mom or dad gone.

Please stop by and check out this information.

Weekend Finds in 105 Temp Heat......

For more great weekend finds

I got this blue pot that has a bottom that makes
it lean. I want to do this one with the one below
and lean or lay that pot down in the yard.
If it turns out I will post a picture. I paid $5
for the two pots. Oh yes, for $1 I got this small
fence with a flower box attached (it is turned
backwards).

This bench is missing a dowel rod on one arm
and it was only $5. It needs sanding and a
coat of my country blue paint. The seat opens
up for storage space. I have it outside under my
car port.

I found several games for the grandkids but won't
do a picture - a game is a game, is a game. Candy

Political Correctness

There is an annual contest at Texas A&M University calling for the most appropriate definition of a contemporary term.

This year's term was: "Political Correctness."

The winner wrote: "Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end."

This guy has nailed it.

"The Killer Inside Me" Movie

Racks of 1950s-style clothing were brought into Enid’s First Baptist Church for the extras. Lots of 50s style cars appeared on the square. The local police had the whole square cordoned off so local traffic would not bother the filming. Enid’s downtown Square was abuzz about the filming that would occur around the Garfield County Court House. Businesses around the Square were visited by officials from the production company, and some had temporary changes made to their store fronts. Movie officials filled the front windows at Serendipity with 1950s items, and employees at the home decor store were happy to clear out their front window for the sake of the film. The gowns in the window of The Bridal Shop Downtown were replaced during filming with gowns from the 1950s. The film, 'The Killer Inside Me' is scheduled to be released next year and is based on a novel written by Oklahoma native Jim Thompson. The film will star Casey Affleck (above picture in white shirt and cowboy hat), Kate Hudson, Jessica Alba, Simon Baker, Bill Pullman and Ned Beatty.
