Welcome to the Ann Tucker Blog!

Welcome to my personal blog. Thanks to my son for building this neat blog page. I decided I wanted to give my thoughts and words to the world and hope they have some meaning and memories to grandparents (and others) everywhere. I am a retired civil servant (35.5 years with the Department of the Air Force), mother of two and grandmother of five. My maiden name was Scaling and I was married to Tilford N. Tucker. I raised and put two great children through college so I have a lot of experiences to build on. After retirement I became a webmaster (working for my son) for some of our family websites: ShaggyDuck
Have a fun time and a great day, bookmark this site and come back often!!!!

Fixing Old Trunks

DIY Day @ ASPTL

Do It Yourself Day

I had grabbed up several old trunks at garage sales for next to
nothing (before people started buying them and charging a mint for them in their
antique stores). They were really yucky looking and smelled old and musty inside.
I painted them (different colors) and put some smears of black to give them some character.

Then if you can see past the quilt I have in this one, I decoupaged the
insides with cut up pieces of wall paper from old wallpaper books I got for free
from some paint stores. These old trunks, especially the hump back ones
are wonderful for storage and kids can even sit on them.
P.S. I even have an old steamer trunk in my basement that I paid $2 for
and it has the drawers, hangers and all inside. It is black leather outside
and even has someones initials on it. Makes you feel like you
just got off the Titanic. I just don't have room for it as it is really big.

Wow - what a great idea. I've never thought of that before but sounds brilliant. Very creative.

As an antique collector, I beg of you not to decoupage them! It definitely de-values their original state.
We have several here too...we sand the wood back to the original, and often if they are metal, you can sand off the rust and make them look better....but painting them or decoupaging them makes them lose their value and makes them no longer "antique" in value....

You did get some good deals on the trunks. I have one that my Mother found somewhere (not a family piece) - the inside had been lined with fabric.

ONE WORD... JEALOUS! I've always loved old trunks. I once acquired an old wicker baby basket in perfect condition. I kept the girls baby blankets and some toys in it. Still have but afraid the girls will try to play in it.
