Straight Line Winds

These pictures are of the roots of two trees that were ripped right out of the ground. We've had so much high wind lately, it made me think of what we went through a couple of years ago, when we had what the weather man calls "straight line wind" damage.
When the National Weather Service does a storm damage survey they distinguish between straight-line wind and wind produced from a tornado. Straight-line wind damage will push debris in the same direction the wind is blowing (hence the creation of the term straight-line). Tornado damage will scatter the debris in a variety of different directions since the winds of a tornado are rotating violently. This type of survey can be used to determine if straight-line wind occurred instead of a tornado or vice versa. Straight-line wind intensity can be as powerful as a tornado. Because of this some people in the general public will believe a tornado occurred when in reality one did not occur.
This is a sample of what straight line wind can do. we had a line through one neighborhood with a lot of trees that looked like this. Pulled the whole tree out, root and all! If you'd like to see more of our pictures, check this out.

Holy tamoly - that's crazy. That wind is one grumpy and strong fellow.
Hope the clean up goes ok ...
What a bummer to lose trees. It's interesting to have to differentiate what type of wind you get: the Felix Unger or the Oscar Madison.
What's that tall building on the newspaper's header? City Hall?
Marissa: This is one of our family websites and Curtis designed that site. The tall building is an office building. We have three tall buildings but you can't see the other two. I love how you differentiate!
P.S. Marissa: that is my primary job working for Curtis, keeping the EnidBuzz site up to date. I probably know more about Enid than anyone around.
I especially like it when our neighbors tree lands in our yard and we do all the clean up to include fixing their fence... Mother nature targets the wrong people!
You have a really neat site about the town (and a totally cool boss). Wish we had something like that in ours. I know one person from Enid, my best friend's ex-husband. His family name is Ellsworth. But his mom left with him probably at least 30 yrs ago.
Hi Granny Ann,
Quick one - I added you to my list of blogs that I like. Thought I'd let you know because it's nice to be nice. Hooray!
Thanks Chris for adding me. I really have lots of nice friends that I blog with.
Those pictures in Enid are so scary. I have about 22 big trees in my yard! We had tornado warnings in some parts of our state last night!
