Welcome to the Ann Tucker Blog!

Welcome to my personal blog. Thanks to my son for building this neat blog page. I decided I wanted to give my thoughts and words to the world and hope they have some meaning and memories to grandparents (and others) everywhere. I am a retired civil servant (35.5 years with the Department of the Air Force), mother of two and grandmother of five. My maiden name was Scaling and I was married to Tilford N. Tucker. I raised and put two great children through college so I have a lot of experiences to build on. After retirement I became a webmaster (working for my son) for some of our family websites: ShaggyDuck
Have a fun time and a great day, bookmark this site and come back often!!!!

Is It Over Yet?

Well, as the saying asks, "Is it over yet?" Almost. The end of the year is really rather depressing. Time to think about paying for Christmas, digging out all the paperwork for paying taxes, putting up all the decorations and getting the house back to normal. The kids have been spoiled rotten with high tech electronic games, ipods, itouch's, wii's, nintendo DS's and digital cameras. I certainly hope the tech world can keep ahead of my grandkids, or they might have to get a board game for Christmas sometime. A surprise for me was two teenagers who wanted the "Twilight" series novels this year. Gads, reading a book, what a treat for a change. I'm not too sure vampires are what I'd choose for them to read about but at least they are reading. I got a memory foam pillow and if you don't have one, get one! They are wonderful. We didn't do presents for the adults this year, just the kids so it was less expensive. We had great food, fun being with family and watching the kids. We sure could have used some snow but in Oklahoma it is rare to get snow at Christmas time. When the rest of the states are in nice weather, that is when we get 10 inches of snow and ice!

After Christmas.....

The Christmas tree sparkles with lights all aglow
Outside it's too warm and definitely no snow.
The packages are opened and moved to their place
Under the tree, you see a large open space.
It's no fun putting the decorations away
I'm almost tempted to let them stay.
So get the ornament holders, the box for the tree
and hope my daughter will put it all away for me!

She's an Alert Lady.......

Well here I am, back online after a few boring days in the hospital. Had a surgery last Friday morning and spent the week going from intensive care, to upgraded care then down a floor to plain care then down to the "getting ready to go home" care. My daughter said the last floor looked like the geriatric ward. The food and beds definitely have not gotten any better since the last time I was there. You know I have been walking around feeling like I have a body of a 40 year old and the mind of a 20 year old, then I am shocked into reality by a nurse who told another nurse that I "am an ALERT lady who understands anything they say to me"...........an Alert lady, gads what an eye opener. (My son, who I do computer work for will be glad to hear that.) Guess I better check my birth certificate, find out my real age and realize that I retired some 6 years ago. I had a neat doctor who got into my belly and got rid of a lot of scar tissue from a previous operation and fixed a couple of hernias, one of which was crimping an intestine. Had been walking around like that for awhile, not knowing anything was wrong with me until it started sending cramps across my stomach. I had wondered why I gained so much weight in my middle all of a sudden. They did tell me I got well a lot faster than they thought I would. (It was because i had to get out of that hospital bed and back home in a hurry. I almost elevated myself into a sandwich a couple of times with the bed buttons.) My back hurt before I went in and certainly didn't get any better while there. As a result I am trying a pain medicine patch on my back if I can figure out the best place to put it. The first one they gave me was great and since I seem to be off by a few inches. From Friday till Saturday morning, my daughter let me stay there with a hair do that was a cross between a chicken look and a spike. Laying around is a horror to natural curly hair. Even trying to comb it made it look worse. Oh well maybe the other patients I passed in the hallway thought I was "non alert" and didn't realize what I looked like! Now if I can just get my strength back and my knees working I should be back to normal in a month or so. Keep checking in and find out just how well I am doing and if I am still alert!

Hey Granny Ann fans,

Granny Ann had emergency surgery on Friday and has been in the hospital. Nothing to do with the heart. She's doing well and should be home in two more days.

Thanks for checking in!

Chicken Croissant Wraps Recipe

This is a great family favorite or makes a terrific holiday dinner party item:

3-4 pieces boneless chicken breasts
1 can of croissants
1 bowl of seasoned bread crumbs
1 small bowl of melted butter
1 block of cream cheese

These items are optional and can be replaced with whatever you like.

1 small cup of mushrooms
1 cup of chopped black olives

Boil your chicken until done, then dice it up.
Put chicken, cream cheese, and whatever optional ingredient you choose
in a bowl and blend together.
Pull your croissants apart, spread each one out a little then put a spoon
full of your mixture at the widest end and roll up croissant.
Then dip croissant into the butter and roll in the bread crumbs.
Put on a cookie sheet and bake until golden brown at 350 degrees.

Serve with a garden salad.

The Drawing

My grandson turned 5 years old in September, but is big for his age and has been riding a bike without training wheels for over a year. I saw an ad where a car parts place is having a drawing for a really neat bike. I filled out the form for my grandson and told him we were going to go put his form in a drawing for the bike. I sometimes forget he is just a little kid since he acts bigger (being around his teenage sisters and their friends). I took him to the store, and since I could see the man at the counter, I waited in the car. I gave him the form and said go give this to the man at the counter and say thank you. He went in like a big guy, handed the man the form, said thank you and came back and got in the car. I noticed as he was coming out of the store that he sure got a good look at the bike that was sitting close to the door of the store. When he got in the car I asked "what did the man say?" and he told me the " the man said thank you but he didn't give me the bike!" Oops, guess I didn't explain about a drawing good enough so we started all over again. Some things are a little hard to explain to a little kid - sort of like "where does Santa live and how does he get the reindeer to fly?"

Hubbles Number 1

A friend sent me an email with the top 10 photos taken by the Hubble telescope. This was the number 1 photo.

The Sombrero Galaxy - 28 million light years from Earth - was voted best picture taken by the Hubble telescope. The dimensions of the galaxy, officially called M104, are as spectacular as its appearance. It has 800 billion suns and is 50,000 light years across.

It looks like something that should be on top of my Christmas tree!

Christmas List

Well we had a very delicious Thanksgiving dinner and we had all my grandchildren home (one 15 year old lives with her dad in another town). There was a lot of noise of course when you have three kids laughing and teasing each other. I find the older I get the harder it is to take all the action. We all had our hair done by our 5 year old playing with the (unplugged) curling iron. Ouch! He had watched them really using the iron the day before so he decided he would try it. My daughter and the kids went to Oklahoma City on Friday to shop. Now that takes guts, on Black Friday in a big city, to shop. I went one year and that was one time too many. It was like shopping with a heard of buffalo. I fail to understand shopping like that for only a few dollars off. I have done most of my shopping online in the comfort of my living room, with only my two cats to contend with.

We got our Christmas trees up and decorated which we always try to do the day after Thanksgiving day while my daughter is off work and can help me. A few years back we went to artificial trees since it seemed like the live trees they were bringing in were usually dead in a week to 10 days. Plus I HATED having to get all the needles out of the carpet and I want to go green to save real trees. Next is the task of wrapping Christmas presents which I always seem to put off until the last minute. I just don't like getting out all the paper, clearing off a place to wrap and getting it done. Thank goodness for those big bags to put large items in and for decorative boxes. For those trying to save money this year, here is a list of some items I think make great gifts for Christmas:

Good magazines or books for the teenagers
A family board game
An iPod for any of the kids that don't have one
A Doll or small train for the young kids
Warm pajamas for moms and dads
A collectible for collectors in the family
A new backpack for the school kids
Plus don't forget to give a gift to your YWCA or Salvation Army for someone needy.
